Sustainability policy

Green fingers and green values

Dobbies is one of the UK’s leading garden centres. This extends beyond providing the best garden products, service and advice. We make it our number one priority to be responsible and care for our environment. As a business, we know we must raise awareness and promote better sustainability among our customers, employees, regulators, investors, suppliers, the community and the environment as a whole, not just for today, but for the long term.

We keep you informed

If we lead, others can follow. Every year, we will let everyone know what we’re doing to improve our social and environmental performance. We’ll show how we’re reducing the environmental impact across all of our operations and how we are promoting a sustainable approach to our business.

We will do everything we can to ensure everyone that works for Dobbies and everyone that works with Dobbies knows what they have to do. Whether it means training, development and key performance indicators we will ensure everyone knows their responsibilities.

And as long as we do it right, it will improve year on year.

We inspire

It’s not enough for just us to do it. We have to help others too. We will encourage our customers to lead a sustainable lifestyle by offering goods that are ethically-sourced and have a lower impact on the environment.

Not only that, we will work with our supply chain to reduce environmental impact and improve ethical behaviours. We make it our responsibility to assess our suppliers and make sure they’re introducing best practices. And if they’re not as green as they could be, we will work with them to ensure they are.

We respect nature

Nature plays a very important part in our business. With this in mind, we want Dobbies to have one of the lowest carbon footprints in the UK. This means keeping our daily energy use to a minimum by lowering our energy requirements and, where possible, generating our own renewable energy.

We’re not content with merely complying with regulations. We have an environmental management system that gives stores an individual target for reducing their energy and water use. Our system identifies our environmental impact, directly and indirectly, so we can develop programs to continually improve our performance.

With this in place, we can keep our greenhouse gas emissions as low as possible and exceed all requirements for compliance in environmental legislation.

Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Legislation

Following the introduction of WEEE legislation, old electrical items must not be disposed of with standard waste, but should be taken to a central collection point for recycling.

All new products now carry a symbol of a crossed out wheelie bin. Click here to view.

This is to remind our customers that the product should be disposed of carefully and not thrown out with general household waste.

For more information please read our WEEE policy here.
