Dobbies helps make veteran memorial possible

15 June, 2016

Dobbies Livingston has given a local community project a green fingered hand by gifting £450 worth of growing tools and plants to Craigshill Community Centre. Facilitated by West Lothian Youth Action Project and The Royal British Legion, the community garden will become the first veteran befriending space in Livingston and will feature a dedicated veteran memorial.

Project leads, Jane Groves of Craigshill Good Neighbour Network and Helen Davies of Youth Action Project, visited the Dobbies store in Livingston to select the products needed to create the new garden space. Volunteer veteran, and keen gardener, Bob XX, was also on hand to help select peaceful and pretty plants for the memorial garden. After scouring the store, the team left with an abundance of gardening tools and plants along with beautiful climbing roses and Weeping Willow trees to decorate the memorial area.

Laura Stevens, community champion at Dobbies Livingston said: “Helping the local community flourish is hugely important to us at Dobbies and we think the new memorial garden will be the perfect tranquil escape for those looking to get away. The team have a really great vision for the project and we can’t wait to see the finished space.”

Jane Groves, manager at Craigshill Good Neighbour Network said: “We were delighted to accept £450 worth of growing products from Dobbies Livingston to support our Veteran Befriending and Community Garden Intergenerational Project. The garden will be a fantastic new addition to the area and we’re sure it will become a special place for anyone who has served in the armed forces or has lost someone close to them.”

To help communities grow, Dobbies stores donate plants and gardening equipment to local good causes. After launching in 2010, Helping Your Community Grow has positively evolved to help charities, schools and community groups create positive spaces that make local landscapes a little greener. From sensory gardens to vegetable patches, Dobbies can help local projects grow into something the whole community can enjoy. Applications for 2016/17 are now open – for further information visit www.dobbies.com
