Dobbies Offers Bespoke Christmas Service

01 December, 2015

In the coming weeks, Brits will start ‘working’ an average of 21 hours a week preparing for Christmas, the equivalent of an extra three-day-a-week part time job1.

The findings come from research commissioned by Dobbies Garden Centres, inspiring the launch of its first Christmas Delivered service for customers. The unique service will help bring Christmas plans together and alleviate festive stress for a trial weekend, by expertly selecting the perfect real or artificial Christmas tree. In-store stylists will then hand decorate it and use resident gifting experts to fill ‘under the tree’ with individually chosen, professionally wrapped presents. Every part of the service is bespoke, even the box, which is made to measure for the customer’s exact Christmas tree.

The research reveals almost half the nation (43 per cent) struggles or runs out of time for Christmas preparation, squeezing extra festive planning and scores of errands into morning commutes, lunch breaks and evenings to get organised. It also uncovers an underlying fear of criticism by family and friends, with 2.7 million mother-in-laws across Britain being singled out by respondents as a prominent source of judgement2.

More than a quarter of people surveyed said festive preparations felt like a second job (26 per cent). Men and women are feeling almost equally stressed, with the latter feeling slightly more of the burden3. Residents of the Capital look set to work the hardest, with Londoners anticipating an extra 102 hours of ‘work’ during December to get set for Christmas4.

The research also uncovered that although Christmas is a much-anticipated time, a quarter of people secretly don’t enjoy the responsibility of decorating the tree and home (23 per cent). The prospect of deciding on and shopping for the perfect presents also adds extra stress to a third (34 per cent).

Andy King, Managing Director, Dobbies Garden Centres comments: “We’ve recognised that whilst Christmas is a wonderful time of year filled with excitement and fun, many hardworking families are struggling to find the time to make it as magical as they want it to be. We were surprised to see that in our survey, thousands of people would spend upwards of £10,000 to have the work done for them. As Dobbies is renowned for having all your Christmas needs under one roof, ‘Christmas Delivered’ felt like the perfect service to trial.’

Extra responsibility for festive plans is also requiring big seasonal sacrifices, with many forgoing quality time with the family (31 per cent) and partners (18 per cent), abandoning hobbies (25 per cent), neglecting exercise and healthy eating (19 per cent) and even losing concentration in the workplace (13 per cent) in favour of festive planning.

This is no surprise, as a shocking third of Brits (32 per cent) will have to face the workload alone, with no support from loved ones. For some families, that could be the man of the house, who one in ten (11 per cent) identified as the person taking on most of the festive work in their household, in a turning of stereotypical tables.
