New King's Lynn shopping destination opens for business

17 October, 2013

A brand new King’s Lynn shopping destination has been launched with a day of customer celebrations.

The joint development at King’s Lynn is the first in the UK, with an 80,000 sq ft Tesco Extra store sitting alongside a 50,000 sq ft Dobbies Garden Centre, accessed through a single glazed atrium entrance.

Shoppers gathered at the store, on Hardwick Road, to mark the launch of the new retail destination. Celebrations started at 10am with a ribbon cutting and continued with complimentary customer refreshments, and a series of activities including a horticultural question and answer session with celebrity gardener Chris Beardshaw.

Representatives from Reach for a Star, the local charity nominated to receive the Tesco community donation, were presented with a £1,000 cheque from Tesco Extra store manager, Andy Holsten.

James Lewis, Chairman and founder of Reach for a Star said: “As a small, relatively new charity we are delighted to receive this donation from Andy and his team. We are due to pay over two thousand pounds for a specialist made tricycle for a three year old little girl with spinal atrophy. This donation will make an incredible difference to her wellbeing, strength and fitness.”

Sam Hudson, Jenna Garrard, and Bethany Cracknell from Dersingham VA and Primary School, winners of the Dobbies “design an eco-garden” competition, cut the Dobbies floral ribbon with celebrity gardener, Chris Beardshaw to launch the store. The pupils also won £500 in gardening equipment and £500 of Tesco gift cards. Dobbies plant experts will help them recreate the winning garden design at their school.

Chris Beardshaw, said: “It has been a great pleasure to help Sam, Jenna and Bethany cut the floral ribbon and officially open the new Dobbies Garden Centre.  I have been hugely impressed with their eco-garden design – it has been refreshing to see the enthusiasm from all competition entries.

“Community projects such as the ‘Here We Grow’ programme are vital to bringing opportunities and support to our schools, community groups, and charities, and I am really pleased to see businesses such as Dobbies investing in our gardening future.”

Celebrations are set to continue with a series of fun filled events taking place. From expert gardening talks, to face painting, balloon modelling, stilt walkers, arts and crafts and musical entertainment, there is something to keep all the family entertained! If you’re looking to keep your little ones occupied over half-term, the new Dobbies and Tesco Extra will also be hosting a half term extravaganza, jam packed with daily activities for young shoppers to enjoy.

Tesco Extra store manager Andy Holsten said: “We have really enjoyed our store launch celebrations and I would like to thank all of our guests and customers for joining us. We are delighted to support Reach for a Star and the invaluable work they do for the community. It has been brilliant to meet our new customers and hear their feedback on the store and the services and ranges.”

Adrian Goodall, general manager at Dobbies, King’s Lynn, added: “We are delighted to announce that our new garden centre in King’s Lynn is now officially open.

“Our new store brings a new-generation garden centre to the area which will not only offer quality, range and value to customers who love their home and garden; but also a unique day-out destination for all the family to enjoy.”

The Tesco store is now open seven days a week from 12.01am Monday to midnight Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays. The Dobbies store is open 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sundays.
