Carrot Cake voted cream of the crop by baking-loving nation

20 September, 2013

Carrot Cake has been named as the baked British classic the nation can’t live without, following a poll by Dobbies Garden Centres – the ‘cuppa and cake’ destination for UK gardeners.

To celebrate its involvement in Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday 27th September, 840 Dobbies customers took part in the 24 hour cake poll to express what baked speciality tickles their tastebuds more, of which 32% voted carrot cake.

As the nation basks in baking fever, the leading garden centre retailer has tasked its stores with collectively selling more than 4,500 Macmillan themed cupcakes in just eight hours!  All proceeds will go directly to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Anthony Hester, Head of Restaurants at Dobbies, said: “Dobbies restaurants are renowned for our appetising afternoon teas as well as our fabulous home-baking, and with our involvement in Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning next week, coupled with baking fever sweeping the nation, we wanted to discover what classic cake the British public can’t live without.

“The results couldn’t be sweeter.  It’s interesting to see that carrot cake was voted as the number one cake the nation can’t live without – perhaps our customers like to make this British classic with ingredients they’ve grown in their back garden!”

Lemon Drizzle (29%) and Victoria sponge (20%) also rose to the challenge, and were named as baked British must-eats!

Dobbies’ special Macmillan themed cupcakes will be on sale for £1 in all Dobbies Restaurants,* marking the fifth year the garden centre retailer has supported Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

Customers can also contribute by giving a donation and guessing the weight of a specially-baked cake from Dobbies bakery.

Anthony added: “We are delighted to be supporting Macmillan for the fifth consecutive year and helping raise valuable funds for people living with cancer.

“Our restaurants are ideal venues for people to gather and take time out to get together with friends and relatives and we are inviting our customers to enjoy one of our Macmillan themed cupcakes, while helping to raise funds at this nationwide event.  We look forward to welcoming hundreds of customers along and we’re confident they’ll have a sweet time!”

Macmillan’s fundraising manager in Lothian & Borders, Linda Hamilton said: “More people are being diagnosed with cancer each year so our services are needed now more than ever.

“We are so grateful to Dobbies for supporting our coffee morning.  One in three of us will receive a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime.  It’s the toughest fight any of us will face  so we hope lots more people across Lothian & Borders will sign up to hold a coffee morning.  It’s a fun and easy way to raise money so we can be there for people affected by cancer, and their families when they need us most.”
