Work Continues on New Dobbies at Sheffield
A new £12m state of the art combined garden centre and retail complex at Barlborough Links, just outside Sheffield, is due to open for trading in early October 2007.
Aiming to be the major destination for homes and gardens retailing in the Sheffield area, a 51,000 sq ft Dobbies Garden World garden centre will act as an anchor for a 95,000 sq ft retail complex and 40,000 sq ft of space is available for lease to complimentary retailers.
A household name in Scotland with an annual turnover of £69m, Dobbies Garden Centres plc aims to be synonymous with inspiration, enjoyment and education. The second largest garden centre operator in the UK, Dobbies is known for their innovative approach in combining destination based retailing with leisure and a lifestyle experience.
Set within the 300 acre Barlborough regeneration area, the highly visible 11 acre site occupies a rural position within the parish of Barlborough and has excellent communication links to the motorway system with Junction 30 of the M1 only a minute drive away.
Targeting the South Yorkshire and Derbyshire area, when complete the Dobbies Garden World will offer everything from indoor and outdoor plants, gardening products and equipment, barbecues and garden furniture, an indoor range boasting a bath and a cook shop, an aquatics department and, last but not least, a 340 seater restaurant with conservatory.
A Dobbies branded Farm Foodhall and a café will be situated in the main retail complex. 11 other associated retailers will be announced later this year, each with a separate shop front leading onto a main covered, heated environment.
The new retail development will also offer extensive free car parking with over 600 spaces and coach facilities.
James Barnes, Chief Executive of Dobbies Garden Centres, commented: “We are delighted to be opening a new Dobbies Garden World in Barlborough, just south of Sheffield, and we look forward to developing a new customer base both locally and in the surrounding area.
“The development will provide a high quality garden centre and retail offer, combined with an enjoyable leisure experience in its own right.”
Work on the new development from Dobbies Garden Centres commenced in October last year when planning consent was granted by Bolsover District Council. The build is being undertaken by the North England based company Henry Boot Construction.
Mick Mosley, Managing Director of local contractor Henry Boot Construction (UK Ltd), adds: “We are delighted to work on this major development from Dobbies. The opportunity has created new jobs and training opportunities for our existing labour force and for subcontractors, thus benefiting the local economy as a whole.”
