Tree-mendous Christmas Tree Tips

With Christmas speedily approaching, it’s time to start thinking about that all important show stopper – the Christmas tree!

Real trees symbolise a traditional Christmas, and for many people the festive season wouldn’t be the same without the captivating fragrance of pine and the distinctive rich green of a fresh Christmas tree.  These days you can find an extensive range of fresh trees in all shapes and sizes to get the perfect fit for your home – naturally!

Some of the popular choices include:

Norway Spruce (Picea Abies)
A very traditional Christmas tree loved by many, the Norway Spruce is sheared to get the dense, nicely uniform shape.  The most popular size is between five and seven feet, but the tree is available in a range of sizes up to 18 feet.

Noble Fir (Abies Nobilis)
With robust tiered branches of fragrant bluish green, this tree is a number one for needle retention.  The most popular size is six to seven feet, but this variety is available in a range of sizes up to 11 feet.  Wider and heavier at the base, this tree is particularly popular in America where many families like to place presents on the bottom.

Nordman (Abies Normaniana)
A more slender tree with lush dark green foliage, the Nordman tree is available in a range of sizes from five up to 10 feet.  This tree is one of the most popular around.

Fraser Fir (Abies Fraseri)
Favoured for its delightful citrus fragrance and lush green foliage, the Fraser is more feathery and the ideal traditional conical shape.  This tree is available from four up to eight feet high.

Top Tips
For best results, saw an inch off the bottom of the tree at a slight angle before mounting it in a stand, this helps the tree absorb water better.  Water regularly (approx one to two litres per day) and position the tree away from direct heat and radiators.  Use a Christmas tree needle spray to minimise needle drop.

Real Christmas trees will be available at Dobbies from the end of November and fresh deliveries will arrive regularly right up until Christmas.

If a real tree isn’t for you, there is also an impressive range of artificial and fibre optic trees out there, as well as a fabulous range of lights and animations.
