Rainbow the Chameleon Settles in

A female Yemen Chameleon called Rainbow has recently set up home at Edinburgh Butterfly & Insect World, based at Dobbies Garden World in Lasswade.

Native to Saudi Arabia, but rescued from Midlothian, the brightly coloured new arrival is settling in well. She loves the heat and can change colour depending on her mood and environment– her colours include green, blue-green, turquoise, brown, yellow and even black on a bad day!

Rainbow is always on the look out as each of her eyes can move independently, so she’ll always know when dinner is about!  Her ultra strong, sticky tongue can shoot out up to one and a half times her own body length which helps her catch food sources including locusts and meal worms in captivity.  Rainbow also sometimes likes small amounts of fruit when she is in the mood for sweet treats!

In fact, another food source for chameleons happens to be their very own skin! Similar to most reptiles, chameleons shed their skin which also acts as a good source of protein, so quite often Rainbow will eat her old sheddings!

As well as getting all the right food sources to keep her well and healthy, Rainbow is also getting first class service from staff at Butterfly World.  Rainbow gets tucked in at night with a duvet placed over her cage to keep her warm and every morning, to keep her moist, she also gets a mini shower and is sprayed with warm water!
