Proposed East Kilbride Dobbies Garden Centre

PROPOSED DOBBIES GARDEN WORLD - PEEL PARK, EAST KILBRIDE

The Proposals

To bring a Dobbies Garden World to East Kilbride including:

  • A Dobbies Garden World, locally supplied farm foodhall and quality restaurant, all under one roof.
  • A heated and external sales area including themed demonstration gardens.
  • A ‘Greenhouse’ horticultural interpretation centre, aimed at inspiring the gardener to push the boundaries of their horticultural knowledge.
  • Eco-gardens which will open up to and include the wooded hillside to the rear.
  • The creation of approximately 120 full and part time jobs

The Building Design

  • The proposed design of the buildings is clearly shown in the drawings and the artist’s impression.
  • In plan the building is a series of long bays giving rise to a highly articulated roof form which serves to minimise the apparent bulk often associated with such buildings.
  • The building frontage steps in and out, breaking up the building line, thereby reducing apparent scale as well as emphasising individual pitched gables reminiscent of glasshouses, echoing Dobbies horticultural roots.
  • The undulating roof edge serves to reduce the apparent height of the building frontage.
  • The main entrance is emphasised by a raised barrel vault roof formed using a glu-lam timber structure.
  • We are careful about selecting the right materials for our Garden World developments. The use of timber cladding softens the appearance of the building and careful use of glazing makes for a more open and welcoming frontage, revealing the horticultural activities within.
  • White fabric clad plant protection canopies extend along the rear of the building, creating frost protection for early bedding stock.
  • Our impact on the environment is of fundamental importance to us and where possible in the construction of our building we will employ the most modern sustainable building techniques and materials.  Equally, we will recycle water through a ‘Grey Water System’ plus our heating and much of our power will come from a biomass boiler, fuelled by sustainable timber.
