Dobbies' history - a timeline

  • 1865 Dobbies founded in Renfrew
  • 1894 Dobbies awarded a Royal Warrant
  • 1910 Demand for prompted a mover to larger premises in Portobello, Edinburgh
  • 1934 Company relocated to Melville, Edinburgh where the company headquarters remain
  • 1969 Company acquired by Waterers and sales flourish north and south of the border
  • 1989 Company rationalisation commences
  • 1994 Management buy out
  • 1996 Acquisition of 2 stores in north east England
  • 1997 Company flotation. Redevelopment of Melville Store, Edinburgh
  • 1999 Opened new store at Dundee and acquired Baileys Garden Centre, Shrewsbury
  • 2000  Acquired 4 Findlay Clark Garden Centres in Scotland & Clifton Garden Centre Preston
  • 2001 Acquired 85,000 sq ft Centre at Atherstone & added Plantasia Visitor Attraction
  • 2004 New build store opens in Ayr
  • 2005 Opened new build store in Stirling and redeveloped Ponteland Store
  • 2006 Acquired Grovelands Garden Centre with existing internet business and opened new build stores in Cirencester and Milton Keynes
  • 2007 Opened new build store at Dunfermline and work commences on Sheffield store.
