Caring for your Furniture

Once you've invested in your new furniture, it's worth referring to the manufacturer's care instructions to keep it looking its best. Here are some handy hints and tips:

Protecting your Wooden Furniture

Natural light affects the colour of both wood-effect and real wood finish furniture. Regularly moving or turning furniture which sits in direct sunlight will help reduce discolouration and ageing.

You should also avoid placing wooden furniture near fires, radiators and air conditioning units to prevent warping.

It is strongly recommended that you store your furniture in a dry place in the winter. Alternatively, use a waterproof cover to prevent a build-up of moss.

Some wooden furniture has special finishes which require extra care and protection. Oiled furniture, for example, may become dry over time and will need re-oiling to protect it.

Protecting your Metal Furniture

To prolong a unique finish and colour it is recommended that you regularly clean your furniture using soap and water with a soft cloth. Rinse and dry thoroughly with a cloth or paper towel for a spotless finish.

It is advised with most metal furniture to use a waterproof cover or store in a dry place when not in use for long periods.

Any scratches and chips in the furniture due to accidental damage can be touched up immediately using touch-up paint.

In the event of flaking, rub with a wire brush until smooth and apply a metallic paint.

Chemical and detergents should not be used for cleaning metal furniture.

Protecting your Textilene Furniture

When not in use it is recommended that your furniture is covered with an outdoor protective weather cover or stored inside in order to extend its longevity.

Always follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions and only use products that they recommend.

Protecting your Granite Furniture

Granite is a natural materal with naturally occuring variations in colour, tone, granularity and pattern. These variations are expected and are the source of its natural beauty.

To maintain the colour of your granite over time, the application of olive oil over the surface is recommended.

This should be done sparingly at first, rubbing the oil into the entire tabletop using a lint-free cloth until a smooth finish is achieved.

This should be done approximately once a fortnight when in use to prevent fading caused by daylight.

Protecting your Resin Furniture

To clean chairs use a pressure washer or jet wash on a wide spray. It is recommended you do this at a distance of about a metre from the product.

All weather wicker or resin furniture can be simply wiped down by hand if a harder wash is not required.

Cushions and parasols (where included) are not waterproof and should not be left outdoors in wet weather.

Protecting your Cane Furniture

Keep a dry environment and do not leave under direct sunlight for prolonged periods.

If the furniture is in the conservatory then it is recommended that you move it around occasionally so that different parts are exposed to the sun. Where possible, blinds should be used.

Cane frames should be cleaned by gently wiping with a soft, damp cloth.

An occasional spray with any good furniture polish will keep the cane looking its best - but you should not apply benzene, thinners, abrasive creams or other potentially harmful chemicals.

Cushions should be turned as often as possible so that any fading caused by direct sunlight is evenly spread. They can be cleaned with a little soapy water on a cloth or with a dry cleaner fabric spray.
