Aphid Attack

 Aphid Attack!

At this time of year aphids are prolific in gardens, attacking roses, trees, shrubs, climbers and bedding, however they can be very easily controlled by a number of products on the market.

There are several insecticides available, Dobbies highly recommended is Provado Bug Killer which is a systemic insecticide, Bug Clear which controls not only Aphid but Black Fly, Red Spider Mite and Caterpillars; Rose Clear which is a dual action containing not only an insecticide but a fungicide which will help control and prevent Black Spot and Mildew on roses and other trees and shrubs.

For the more environmentally conscious gardeners there is Organic Insecticide and Natures Answer natural pest and disease control, this can be used on roses, all outdoor ornamental and flowering plants and indoor plants. This product contains fatty acids and sulphur, which are bio-degradable giving useful control of; Black Fly, White Fly, Green Fly, Mealy Bug, Thrips, Red Spider Mite and reduces Powdery Mildew and Black Spot. To avoid killing beneficial insects such as Lady Birds, Honey Bees and Bumble Bees, it is best to apply the insecticides on an evening just before dusk, this will also reduce the risk of scorching the leaves on plants.

For a totally chemical free way of controlling pests, the best way is to attract birds to the garden, which do a great job of controlling many common garden pests. Common plants which are attractive to birds include; Aucuba, Berberis, Chanomeles, Cotoneaster, Hebe, Holly, Mahonia, Skimmia, Pyracantha, Spirea, Syrngia (Lilac).

Another way to attract birds to the garden is to feed them and Dobbies pride themselves on their all year round range of bird feed and accessories, of which most carry a Bird Care Standards Association (BSA) approved logo. Also, for each item of bird care sold that carries the BTO mark, a donation is made to the British Trust for Ornithology, Britain’s leading bird research organisation. And remember! Always put clean fresh drinking water out and change on a regular basis, following the above advice, to give you hours of bird watching entertainment!
