Plant an Indoor Herb Garden for Winter

Plant an Indoor Herb Garden for Winter

Autumn is a great time to create an indoor herb garden to ensure a continuous supply of fresh herbs during the cold winter months.

The most important ingredient for happy indoor herbs is a bright, south or west-facing window where the plants will be assured of at least five hours of daylight per day. Even when using a window box, herbs should be planted in individual pots to prevent your mint tasting like thyme

Window boxes can be used for growing all sorts of herbs. Terracotta pots with at least a 6’’ diameter at the top are preferred because they allow the air and water to circulate whilst being small enough for compact plants to grow. If you are using a window box, fill it with gravel and bury the individual pots up to the rim. This will make watering easier.

Keep the soil moist as herbs are hungry plants and using a weekly liquid feed will not go amiss!

Ever darkening days, wet and stormy weather, trees shedding their remaining leaves ... but even now there is an array of colour from the bright foliage of variegated evergreens and stems to a wide range of deciduous trees and shrubs.

Autumn is the perfect time to plant fruit trees as the soil is still warm and it also gives tree roots enough time to establish before colder weather hits.
