Sowing

Peas are a cool weather crop and can be planted very early in spring, once daytime temperatures reach 4.4°C. For best results make sure soil is well dug with plenty of added moisture-retaining organic matter. Make sure that the soil isn’t too cold or wet and they are in a sunny position.

The easiest way to sow is to dig out a flat-bottomed trench 5cm (2in) deep and 15cm (6in) wide. Sow seeds evenly in the trench approximately 7.5cm (3in) apart, cover with soil and lightly firm down.

Early varieties can be sown from March to early June and will be ready to pick in 11 - 13 weeks. Later varieties sown between March and June will be ready in around 14 - 16 weeks.

Peas can also be successfully planted in autumn as they will tolerate moderate freezes, but be prepared to provide additional protection if the winter is severe. Plant seeds up to two inches (5 cm) deep if the soil is hot and dry, one inch deep (2.5 cm) if it's cool and damp. Choose hardy over-wintering varieties for an early crop in May.

Growing

Water well during dry periods and mulch the surface to preserve soil moisture. Plants will need support to scramble up; one of the easiest ways is to insert twiggy branches or pea sticks alongside the plants when they’re 7.5cm (3in) high. Lightweight trellis and willow panels and wigwams are attractive alternatives.

Harvesting

Pods are ready to harvest when they are well filled, when the pod is still fresh and green and hasn’t started to dry out. Pick regularly to keep the plants producing more pods. Mangetout and sugar snaps peas should be picked when the pods are about 7.5cm (3in) long and the peas are just starting to develop. Once picked cook or freeze immediately.
